3 Steps to Changing a Toxic Work Culture

SMC

If your group is struggling to develop a healthy, supportive culture — take note. This is a big deal.

Fortunately, an unhealthy or even toxic culture doesn’t have to be set in stone. Once you’re clear-eyed about the problem, here’s what to focus on, in this order.

  1. Establishing a clear vision. What is your vision for your business? What are your values? Understanding what you’re trying to achieve helps you and your team develop a sense that you’re part of something larger than yourselves.
  2. Outlining the structure. What should your organization look like? Start by building an org chart for your current business — without any names. Focus on identifying what needs to be done, which role is accountable for what, and what your expectations are. Only then should you decide where each team member fits best.
  3. Developing your culture. Now you can start actively growing a healthy culture. A good attitude starts at the top, so make the effort to connect with your team. Pay attention to their well-being and ask: who needs coaching or support? Who should be moved to a different job or promoted up?

Give your team direction, structure, clear roles, and supportive management. Your culture will change for the better.
